03 · Getting started
Starting a seafaring career
Tap a bubble to surface the answer.
Start by matching your qualification to a route: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths leads to IMU-CET, engineering graduates look at GME, and Class 10 students look at rating courses. ProCareerTek programs list every route and the team can confirm eligibility.
My Sea Shipping is a guide to three Nanak group businesses. ProCareerTek runs career programs, the Nanak Shipping Institute runs maritime courses and Nanak Ship Management handles crew management and placement.
No. This site publishes no fees, seat counts or placement guarantees. Fees, intakes and approvals are confirmed directly by the business that runs each program, so use the ProCareerTek contact page or the institute and management sites for exact current terms.
Pre-sea training prepares you to join a ship, for example DNS, BSc Nautical Science, GME or BTech Marine, while post-sea training builds the certificates and skills a serving seafarer adds later. The Nanak Shipping Institute course catalogue lists the post-sea side.
Crew placement is handled by Nanak Ship Management, which covers STCW and MLC manning, credential vetting, welfare, travel and payroll with a typical 14 to 30 day onboarding timeline. Read the crew management service for how it works and ask about current openings.
Use the enquiry builder on our contact page or call the number shown, and a marine professional will reply. You can also write to the career team through the ProCareerTek enquiry page with your qualification, age group and the route you are considering.

IMU-CET and pre-sea questions
Tap a bubble to surface the answer.
IMU-CET is the entrance test used for admission to many pre-sea programs in India, including nautical science and marine engineering routes. Students finishing Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths usually prepare for it, and ProCareerTek IMU-CET coaching is built around it.
ProCareerTek lists expert coaching, more than 200 practice papers and AI mock analytics that show where marks are being lost. The full description sits on the ProCareerTek services page, and the team can explain the format and batch options when you contact them.
Split your weeks into three phases: concepts first, topic drills next and full mock papers last, while leaving time to review every mistake. Our exam prep planner on this page turns your weeks and daily hours into a split, and ProCareerTek mock analytics can show weak areas.
The routes listed by ProCareerTek that students commonly reach through IMU-CET are DNS and BSc Nautical Science for deck, and BTech Marine for engineering. Seats and eligibility depend on the institute, so confirm current rules through the ProCareerTek team before you plan.
Yes, seafaring programs apply age limits, eyesight and medical fitness standards set by institutes and the regulator, and these can change. This site does not publish exact limits, so ask the ProCareerTek counsellors for the latest requirement before paying for coaching or applying.
Many students begin during Class 12 so that revision for school boards and the entrance test run side by side. Use a realistic weekly plan, take mocks regularly, and ask the ProCareerTek coaching team how their batches fit alongside school hours.
05 · Deck
Deck officer questions
Tap a bubble to surface the answer.
A deck officer navigates and runs the ship's cargo and safety operations, starting as a cadet and rising through Third, Second and Chief Officer to Master. ProCareerTek lists DNS, BSc Nautical Science and Officer of Watch pathways on its deck officer programs page.
Both are deck-officer pre-sea routes: DNS is a Diploma in Nautical Science and BSc Nautical Science is a degree-level program. Duration, eligibility and approvals differ by institute, so ask the ProCareerTek team to compare them against your qualification.
A cadet learns watchkeeping, seamanship, mooring and safety practice on board under the supervision of officers while completing the training book. For skills you can add later, the Nanak Shipping Institute featured courses include Bridge Team Management Refresher.
NSI-001 Bridge Team Management Refresher and NSI-019 Leadership and Human Element suit deck officers, and the catalogue lists deck, tanker, safety, offshore and simulator courses besides. Browse everything on the institute course catalogue and confirm that a course fits your rank.
Progress comes in stages: pre-sea qualification, cadet training, an Officer of Watch certificate, then added sea time and exams for each higher rank. ProCareerTek describes a cadet-to-captain roadmap on its career guidance page, and the regulator sets the exact rules.
Yes, Nanak Ship Management provides crew management covering STCW and MLC manning, credential vetting, training, welfare, travel and payroll for owners. Qualified officers can ask about current needs through the crew management page, though no placement is promised.
06 · Engine
Engineer officer questions
Tap a bubble to surface the answer.
A marine engineer looks after the ship's main engine, generators, pumps and electrical systems, rising from trainee engineer through Fourth, Third and Second Engineer to Chief Engineer. ProCareerTek lists GME, BTech Marine and Chief Engineer pathways on its engine officer programs page.
GME stands for Graduate Marine Engineering, a route for engineering graduates who want to become marine engineers. Which degree branches qualify and what the entry rules are can change, so check with the ProCareerTek counsellors before you plan your application.
BTech Marine is a degree-level program taken after Class 12, while GME is for people who already hold an engineering degree. Both lead into the engineer officer pathway and both are listed on the ProCareerTek services page with details available from the team.
NSI-003 Engine Room Resource Management and NSI-009 Advanced Automation and Control Engineering are featured for engineers, with more in the engine category of the catalogue. See the advanced courses page and check each course against your certificate and rank first.
They keep the main engine, auxiliary machinery, fuel systems and electrical plant running safely and efficiently, and carry out planned maintenance. Technical management teams such as Nanak technical ship management depend on this work and on machinery reliability and fuel diagnostics.
Yes, Nanak Ship Management supplies international skilled labour including certified electricians, welders (6G, TIG and MIG), structural fitters and helpers. If your skill is a trade rather than an officer route, read the international labour supply page.
07 · Ratings
Ratings and Sri Lanka CoC questions
Tap a bubble to surface the answer.
A rating is a crew member who works on deck or in the engine room under the officers, doing tasks such as mooring, watchkeeping support, maintenance and cleaning. ProCareerTek lists General Purpose and engine rating courses on its rating courses page.
Rating routes are usually the way in for students who have finished Class 10 and want to go to sea sooner, though age, medical and entry rules apply and can change. Ask the ProCareerTek team for the current rules before enrolling.
It is a Sri Lanka Certificate of Competency issued under STCW recognition, and ProCareerTek lists facilitation of it under the Sri Lanka CoC (White List) service. Requirements depend on your existing certificate and rank, so share your papers with the ProCareerTek CoC team.
No. Acceptance depends on the flag state, the employer and the issuing authority, and rules change, so nothing here should be read as a guarantee. Ask for written confirmation from ProCareerTek and your prospective employer before you commit time or money.
Yes, serving ratings often add safety, security and specialist courses over time, and the Nanak Shipping Institute lists more than 200 maritime courses including deck, engine, catering, offshore, security and simulator areas. Browse the institute catalogue and ask which suits your role.
Crew placement and onboarding are handled by Nanak Ship Management, which vets credentials and medicals, arranges training, travel and payroll, and quotes a 14 to 30 day onboarding timeline. Start with the crew management page and ask about current vacancies.
08 · Training
Training course questions
Tap a bubble to surface the answer.
The Nanak Shipping Institute lists more than 200 maritime courses across deck, engine, tanker and cargo, catering, offshore, safety, security, simulator and auditing or ISO areas. The full list sits on the institute course catalogue, and our filter helps you narrow it.
Featured courses include NSI-001 Bridge Team Management Refresher, NSI-003 Engine Room Resource Management, NSI-005 Ballast Water Treatment Systems, NSI-008 Enclosed Space Entry, NSI-009 Advanced Automation and Control Engineering and NSI-019 Leadership and Human Element, shown on the featured courses page.
The institute is led by its director, Capt. Dilip Narsian, a Master Mariner. You can read about him on the institute's director profile and ask the team to explain how courses are delivered and which ones suit your rank.
Start with your rank and the area you serve in, such as deck, engine or safety, then check the course entry requirements and whether your company or flag asks for it. Use the filter on this page, then confirm with the Nanak Shipping Institute admissions team.
No, this site does not publish fees, batch dates or approvals because they change and belong to the institute. Ask the Nanak Shipping Institute for the current fee, schedule and approval details of any course you shortlist.
Yes, owners and managers can ask the institute about training for groups, and Nanak Ship Management already includes training within crew management. Start with the crew management service or contact the institute about your team size and discipline.
